WHO has issued a fresh set of guidelines for wearing masks to protect oneself from the deadly coronavirus. Earlier, it stressed masks only for those suffering from its symptoms or sick or for the carers and medical fraternity.
But in its recently released set of new guidelines, WHO says that evolving evidence suggests that a mask is a necessity for everyone and therefore should be worn by everyone in public.
WHO’s one study recently found that homemade cloth masks may help provide a “modest reduction in transmission.”
Other advantages include reducing the risk of asymptomatic carriers spreading the virus. The mask is a symbol to remind the population that there is a life-threatening risk around and constantly motivates them to take adequate precautions for the same. Mask enables public movements and thus stimulates economic activity too, WHO said.
Along with masks, WHO emphasizes social distancing. Medical masks can be worn by those living in susceptible areas and unable to create social distance.
